Take a Seat!

For as long as I can remember I have had a thing for chairs! I mean you can’t blame me; they are practical, and we use them every single day and let’s be honest there are so many beautiful designs!

In my work as an interior designer and interior stylist I am always on the hunt for beautiful chairs to use in my projects, from classic designs and antiques to modern masterpieces I can always find space to squeeze another!

I thought I would share a few of the things that I look for in chairs, as not every chair is alike and there is definitely a difference between a chair that will last a lifetime and one that will have a wobbly leg in no time!

Firstly Shape;

Shape is everything! Chairs have the rare opportunity not only to bring comfort into your home, but also sculpture, not many pieces can do this, both practical and beautiful! I’m drawn to hand carved, fretwork, shaped and gilded chairs, you can see and feel the time spent on making each chair perfect! I like to

Secondly Upholstery;

Upholstery can completely transform a chair, I am in one of two camps when it comes to upholstery; The first one is printed fabrics (especially from my own fabric collection!), a fabric with a print is a fantastic way to add dimension and personality to a chair, you can use it to both highlight your chair as well as make it  coordinate with your space. The second camp I sit in is solid colour upholstery, I love chairs covered in solid velvets or colourful leathers, solids are a great for highlighting the shape of your chair as well as being very practical to live with too.

Finally, Comfort;

As they say comfort is key and that’s absolutely true with chairs, what’s the use in a chair that looks amazing, but that you can’t get comfortable on! I have to admit that antique furniture is more often then not much more comfortable then new (or will be once reupholstered), but if your looking for new then look for chairs that are well made, that are sturdy or are classics re imagined, these pieces are usual going to be more comfortable then mass produced disposable chairs!

Remember that a good chair can spend a lifetime with you, so search out what you love and enjoy it every day!
