JACKA DESIGN – Portuguese – Good-Luck Rooster – Large

In Portugal, the rooster is a symbol of faith, good fortune, and justice, rooted in the legend of the “Old Rooster of Barcelos.” The tale recounts the story of a pilgrim journeying through Spain who is wrongly accused of stealing silver from a landowner and sentenced to death by hanging.

Desperate to prove his innocence, the pilgrim begs the judge to reconsider his sentence. Just as the judge was about to enjoy his roasted rooster, the pilgrim vowed that, as a sign of his innocence, the cockerel would rise from his plate and crow.

The judge laughed and set his meal aside, but as the pilgrim was led to the gallows, the rooster miraculously stood up and crowed. In disbelief, the judge rushed to the gallows to free the innocent man.

Years later, the pilgrim returned to Barcelos to carve a statue of the rooster, and the legend and its symbolism endure to this day.
