Living Room Interior Design: How to Choose a Rug

Wondering how to choose a rug for your living room?

With such a range of beautiful rug designs, it can be hard to find the best modern living room rug for your home. Believe it or not, a rug can be the difference between your room looking amazing and confusing. But there are some steps you can follow to find the perfect rug, and style it beautifully within your room. Follow my simple tips for maximising your rug placement to transform your space.

Consider Your Style

Before you even step foot inside a rug store, you need to have a good sense of your personal design style. There are so many colours, textures and styles of rug to choose from, and it can be daunting if you don’t know where to start! Begin by thinking about what types of rug you are drawn to, and take a look through some interior design websites and magazines for inspiration.

Start with the Room

If you’re looking to purchase a rug for a room that is already established, it will need to work with your existing furniture and colour palette. Take a look around your living room and try to determine what style is already present. If all of your furniture is bold and loud, perhaps a quieter rug that utilises texture and not a busy pattern would be a good choice. If your room is very quiet and minimal in colour, you may want to introduce something fresh.

Think About All Elements

Remember, choosing a rug isn’t just about choosing the right colour. There are three main elements of a rug’s design that you need to consider. Firstly, there is the colour or colours. You can find rugs in just about every shade. Secondly, think about the pattern. Do you like geometric designs? Stripes? Spots? Or maybe a pattern reminiscent of florals? Or classic Persian designs? There are literally thousands of patterns to choose from and each one will suit a different personal style. Finally, rugs come in different textures. The texture of a rug will change the way we interact with our living space. Some rugs are thicker and more luxurious underfoot, while others are firmer and more appropriate for high traffic areas.

Choosing the Right Size

This is a moment in life where size really does matter! Choosing a rug design can be tricky, but figuring out what size you need can be much harder. A rug that is too small can look awkward, while a rug that is too large will take up too much space and dominate the room.

Living Room

In your living room, you want the front of your sofa at least a foot over your rug. You also want to do this with all your other occasional chairs too. The magic of doing this is that it creates one visual piece of furniture rather than many small islands, uniting and making your room look bigger. For a standard 3-seater sofa about 220cm long, your minimum size rug would be a 200 x 300cm or 250 x 350cm.

In your dining room, your rug should sit under the tables and chairs to create a united space. You want your chairs to sit completely on your rug, even when they are pulled completely out. A good rule of thumb is that for a table that measures 200cm x 90cm, your rug should measure 250cm x 350cm.

Losing your rug under your bed is never fun. To avoid this annoyance, your rug needs to extend right around the bed. Take your rug right up to your bedside tables, and make sure it extends at least 50cm around all sides of the bed.
