COFFEE TABLE STYLING IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS

As an interior designer & interior stylist one question I am often asked is how to style a coffee table? I would like to share my five top tips of how to style your coffee table for an original and designer look!

1: Mix it up! For me a resolved coffee table is a combination of elements, scale, material, shape etc. Don’t be afraid to get it wrong, that’s the best way to learn!

2: Elements I always use on my coffee tables;

  • Something natural; fresh flowers, a plant, a shell or a beautiful piece of coral.

  • Books; look for books with interesting covers and interesting subject matter too! I find that monochrome covers are the best team players, but sometimes a colour can bring everything together for a more personal look.

  • Sculpture; for a truly personal look, collect interesting objects, from antique busts, brass animals, a collection of glass paper weights or perhaps a beautiful marble bowl.

  • Other useful pieces are boxes, trays, scented candles, but you can add anything you like, just mix it up and play with it!

3: Create a story, the most beautifully styled coffee tables have a story, it can be fashion, Chinoiserie, designer, modern or minimal, the stories are endless! Have a look at what you already own and bring together stories. For a fashion look start with a book or two on fashion, add a marble bust and some pretty pink roses and there you go!

4: Balance is probably the most important element in creating a resolved coffee table, a balance of all of the elements, think about the overall balance not just the objects you add, the balance of shapes, colours, textures and scales, treat your coffee table like it’s a puzzle, every piece fits a particular space.

5: Stand back; this is the most important step to creating a resolved coffee table! Look at how all of the elements work together and how they balance each other; dose the table look to full or to empty? Does it need more height? Is everything the same and it needs something different to add interest? Is there a mix of materials or is it all the same? Taking a step back and looking at your coffee table, as a whole story will allow for tweaks and changes.

My number one piece of advice it to have fun, there is absolutely no right or wrong and I hope that with this advice you will have a small insight into how I create a styled coffee table for my clients and for my own home!
