Always on the Hunt!

In my work as an interior designer and interior stylist I am always out and about sourcing unique, original and beautiful things for my projects! Over the years I have refined and perfected the art of shopping, so today I though I would share a few of my tips on finding and where to look for the best things to fill your home and wardrobe with!

There are so many ways to shop today, each will have its pros and cons, I’m going to share how each can be used to its best advantage in creating purchases that are personal and reflect you!

The High Street

I am a true lover of the bricks and mortar store! There is nothing quite like the experience of walking into a magical shopping world, from small independent shops with very personal curated collections to posh designer stores and lavish department store sprawling over acers of shop space you are sure to find beautiful things!

What to shop for on the High Street;

  • Look for shops that have a curated range, these shops with become your mecca, you will always find beautiful things in them.

  • Antiques, art and original design are some of my favourite things to shop for on the High Street, you never know what you might find!

  • The thrill of the find, as much as the internet can bring the world to you, there is still something about finding that one off hidden away on a shelf just waiting for you to take it home!

Pros and Cons of the High Street;

  • You get to know the people who work in your favourite shops, this personal service can’t be replaced with an email saying a package is on its way!

  • A real shop has atmosphere, its so much more than a tap, it’s a see, touch, try, smell, hear, feel experience, they are the places where memories can be made!

  • See, try and buy all at the same time.

  • You can take it home today, what else could one want?! No waiting for it to arrive, no missing the postman and no re-deliveries.

  • The biggest draw back is when you trek halfway across town to find out that something is unavailable or has been discontinued.

  • Real shops aren’t open 24 hours, 7 Days a week, so if you’re really wanting to spend that cash at 3am in the morning you will need to wait until sunrise!

The Shopping Centre

The cathedrals of our modern world with shopping being the mecca, they are filled with almost everything one could need, but only new things here beware that soul may be a little harder to find!

What to shop for in Shopping Centres;

  • Filled with endless chain shops you can definitely find your basics here, but don’t hope for many original finds.

  • If you’re looking for a toaster or a pair of running shoes you have found the right place!

Pros and Cons of the Shopping Centres;

  • You will always find somewhere to park your car but be mindful of the minutes spent driving to your shop filled mecca!

  • If you see it you can have it now, no waiting required!

  • You can compare and then take home today all with the peace of mind that the chance of the wrong size or strange colour is 100% better than an online buys chances!

Markets & Bazaars

Markets and Bazaars with unexpected finds, filled with endless independent sellers selling all manner of goods, from piles of antique china to taxidermy and handmade furniture you will always be surprised with what you will take home!

What to shop for at Markets & Bazaars;

  • Never go with a shopping list, go with an open mind and a keen eye, you never know what you might spy!

  • Books, Antiques, handmade pieces, the list of what you might find here is endless, but filled with so much more thrill when you find something for not only a bargain, but that is so unique that you are now the owner of something so original that no one else on earth has one!

Pros and Cons of Markets & Bazaars;

  • Filled with so much unique merchandise you are bound to find pieces that you will keep forever!

  • You can take all of your amazing finds home with you!

  • You might leave empty handed.

  • Things can sometimes be a bit pricy or in poor condition so shop with a sharp eye and mind!

The Internet

Nothing has changed the way that we shop more then the internet, we can spend endless hours browsing to our hearts content and shop the whole world not only our backyard! I mainly use the internet for research, you can learn everything you ever could dream of about a single thing, this makes you a better shopper no matter where you end up spending your money.

What to shop for on the Internet;

  • The answer to this question is endless, where dose one start?! You can find absolutely anything and everything, from new to old!

Pros and Cons of the Internet;

  • Its ease to compare products.

  • It can be a little tricky to really know what your getting, from the colour to the size it can be a little bit of a gamble!

  • The internet is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so shopping in the early hours is easy.

  • You will most likely have to wait at least a few days for that amazing buy to arrive and fingers crossed your home!

  • Everything is delivered right to you at home!

  • You get twice the thrill of the buy, fist when you tap buy, second when you open the box!

  • Sometimes that perfect thing is on the opposite side if the planet and they won’t ship to you.

Social Media

The newest addition to our shopping options, Social media has allowed us to shop the things we like the most with the tap of a finger!

What to shop for on Social Media;

  • You have already curated your dream shopping list filled with all of your favourite designers, brands and artists.

  • Keeping up to date with your favourite brands has never been so easy, you can buy things as soon as they are released!

  • Buying original pieces from up and coming designers and artist has never been so easy.

Pros and Cons of Social Media;

  • You’re always in the know.

  • Sometimes having the newest can mean that you end you having all the same things as everyone else.

  • Originality can be hard to find as what’s fashionable is often what will flood your feed!

In Summary shopping no matter where you end up spending your money can either a chore or a pleasure!

For me it’s all about the experience and finding unique and original things to fill my life and the homes that I work on with! If your ever in need of a personal shopper to find you unique pieces get in touch and lets, see what can be found!
