It’s a little hard to believe that it is already the 1st of December, where has 2019 gone?! But with the 1st of December comes one of my favourite times of year, the festive season filled with parties, family and friends and with all the celebrations comes the decorating!
I must admit that I start to think a little about my plans for my home as early as September, but with a little extra planning and a considered approach comes a seamless and beautiful festive season!
I have a few steps to decorating my home, nothing to elaborate, filled with beautiful pieces that comeback every year that are filled with happy memories of years past.
For me decorating my home for Christmas is the same as how I decorate every room of my home and the homes of my Melbourneinterior design and interior stylingclients, with layers of personal objects that reflect me and/or my clients and not the trends of mass produced fashion.
So how do you create a personal look? Well its much easer then you might think! About 50% of my Christmas décor is made up of pieces that are from around my home all year round, from crystal candles sticks, chrome sculptures and peacock feathers, these pieces that are part of your home all year set a very strong personal style foundation; Just think about what could fell festive when put in a different context; look for metallics; brass, silver and gold, glass and crystal add a little sparkle and that collection of pinecones can take centre stage! You will be surprised at how much of your existing décor can be used!
Christmas décor comes in many shapes and forms, from the animated and over the top to the traditional and handmade, working out what works for you is very personal, but I definitely recommend thinking will I still love this next year and do I want to store this? These are the two questions that I ask myself and I think they have helped me in making better choices, not just for this Christmas but for the many to come!
So what do I buy?
Each year I like to add a new set or two of decorations to my collection, my favourite pieces are handmade and hand decorated European decorations from Germany and Poland, these can be a little pricey, but for me I prefer to invest in beautiful unique pieces then to just completely start from fresh with mass products plastic pieces each year.
So how do I create a different felling each year?
As I am adding a few new sets each year I think about what I am missing from my collection and then what can I add that will give this year its own personal style without throwing out all of the last years decorations. This is also affected by the pieces I decide to use from throughout my home, from blue and white ceramics too a pair of brass deer I am able to create a fresh look and feel!
