When envisioning an island getaway, one often conjures images of palm trees and an endless expanse of azure sea. However, when it comes to crafting the interior of such a retreat, where does one commence? In the case of this endeavour, Gabriel Jacka was entrusted with revitalizing a residence perched on a cliff, commanding awe-inspiring vistas of the ocean and the distant Whitsundays islands. Despite its potential, the house had never truly felt like a home.
Here, the focus lies squarely on the view, with the interiors carefully designed to serve as a backdrop for the unfolding drama of nature beyond. Warmth, texture, and, most significantly, a genuine sense of place were introduced to elevate this private sanctuary. Drawing inspiration from its island setting, the home embraced natural elements, enriching its character and depth.
From the very moment you set foot on the palm-lined private road, an immediate sense of tranquillity envelops you. Upon entering the residence, the comforting embrace of island-inspired hues becomes evident. Natural textures, from woven fibres to the tactile allure of travertine furniture and washed linen upholstery, permeate the space.
At the heart of this home, the open-plan living and dining area beckons as a hub for gathering and relaxation. A travertine dining table stands as an anchoring centrepiece, its smooth, altar-like presence contrasting with its rugged, raw-edged texture. Woven dining chairs introduce an organic touch, adding a handcrafted dimension to the space. Adjacent to the dining area, a cosy lounge nook takes shape, with a woven rug in natural tones offering a soft, unifying element. A travertine coffee table, echoing the dining table’s aesthetics, infuses casual, laid-back charm. A Japanese-designed armchair, echoing the dining chairs in handwoven wicker, introduces a sculptural element. The sofas, cloaked in relaxed washed green cotton, epitomize carefree relaxation and casual style. Above the lofty space, a pair of handwoven seagrass mats provide a bold personal touch, softening the strong architectural lines.
Stepping away from the main open-plan living area, the covered deck emerges as the ultimate vantage point to savour the panoramic views. Whether nestled in the inviting outdoor lounge or seated at the dining table, the vistas of the islands unveil their most magnificent allure.
Ascending the striking staircase unveils a private retreat, where warm tones and striking textures envelop you. The bed features a curved, woven headboard, a design echoed by the X-bench seating at its foot. Handcrafted and glazed lamps introduce subtle texture, complemented by a captivating round mirror adorned with meticulously placed cowrie shells. The primary bedroom also boasts a private outdoor space, offering even more breathtaking views. Two handwoven chairs are strategically placed to bask in the splendour of island sunsets.
Last but certainly not least, a cosy guest bedroom is tucked away in the quietest corner of the home. With a natural fibre headboard and rattan-woven lamps, it provides the perfect escape, a haven to indulge in reading and soak in the view through its private window, all framed by inspiring picture windows.
